Upgrading memory

i have pc5300 and i want to upgrade to pc8500 but im sure if my processor is compatible i have a amd 4400 x2
a asus m3n78 SE which is compatible

if the processor is not compatible will it bring it down to 800mhz?

Yup though your processor is not compatible but your mobo is. So your memory would downclock to 800mhz. You shouldn't have any problems with that memory.
