I'm planning to buy a phenom II X4 940 and a gtx 295. Which motherboard will work right out of the box without any firmware updates to the mobo?

I saw GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-UD4H 790 GX : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.165047

The price seemed reasonable but in the specifications it says 1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1)
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8_1)
What does that mean? Will I not be able to run 1 gtx 295 in x16?

Or should I just change to ASUS M4A79 Deluxe 790HX?

Pls giv links to ur answers. It'll be my first custom PC. Previously I only bought brand PCs.

it means that the pcie slot labeled with the x8 on it will run at x8..so dont put your gtx 295 there..put it on the slot wer it says x16..

It means that when you run 2 graphics card in Crossfire(As this is a crossfire board), at that time, the 2 slots will run at x8x8 mode...
But in your case, its just a single card...so when you insert the card into the PCIe slot, which says x16 mode, It will run at x16...

Well just an advice...If you are going with the 295, you can get a 790GX or 790X board with a single PCIe slot and save some money...
Actually you can switch your board to this and save some money...

Same as the Gigabyte board you have given sans the on-board graphics chip...

Thnx dudes. I'm now no longer confused :).

Those mobos r the same except there is an integrated card. But with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128384 I'm getting a $50 discount for comboing it with Phenom II 940. So in the end it costs me lesser.
But wont 1 X gtx 295 run in sli? As it has actually 2 GPUs in 1. Will this mobo be able to run the gtx 295 with both GPUs operetional? It seems to me that this is a Crossfire board. Or u can prefer another mobo for me :D

As seen by the motherboard, 1 GTX 295 = 1 Video card (as it only takes up 1 PCIe slot). 2 GTX 295's = SLI, not supported by a x-fire board. Myself, I'd get the 4870, or the 4870x2 instead.

Then y is it called quad sli when u put 2 gtx 295?

I'd stick with the UD4H and just run a gtx 295 or a 4870x2.

If not, and you want to keep sli open, look at the 750a ASUS or the 780a ASUS.

Also, look into this combo if you dont already have the parts.

If you are using an Nvidia Card then you should be using an Nforce 7 series board a single gtx 295 only uses 1 pcie 16X slot (2 gpu cores on 1 board).AMD CPU's run great in Nforce boards.I have an biostar Nforce 720a board and a Phenom II 720X3 and evga 8800 gts 512 (g92) this very cost effective setup is scoring me just over 16000 on 3dmark06 http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=10447714 here is a link to a list of good choices for you at newegg and remember if you are not planning on buying another gtx295 in the future the $69 boistar 720a is just as good for you.If you want SLI later then I would go for a 780a. http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=10447714
