Hello. I'd like to know if the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 is compatible with ASUS P5B-E motherboard. The CPU needs 1333 Mhz FSB but the motherboard has max 1066 Mhz. Dispite it on ASUS CPU support checking page [http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx] it's written that they work together.
What's the truth? I don't wanna spend for a new motherboard if it's not needed.
Thank you for answering.

If Asus have it on the supported CPU list, then it's compatible (though the note still says "Beta" ). Make sure that your BIOS is at the required version (1803 or newer).

Are you sure? I am afraid because (I think) if the FSB of the motherboard is too small it can't work. It's the reason why I'm surprised at ASUS supported list.

Found it :

If u choose Q9650 u will see that P5B-E supports it with 1702 BIOS but it also says:
Due to chipset limitation, 1333FSB processors can only run at a maximum speed of 1066FSB on this motherboard.

That's probably why the support status is Beta.

And will this cause a big performance difference? So is it worth to purchase a new motherboard? What about MSI P45 Neo-F?

If u want to get a 1333MHZ board then go for a board which supports it out of box.
Yes that MSI will support it

But what if I do not upgrade my board?

The new CPU will run at an overclocked FSB of 1333 MHz (which has been supported for a long time). In other words, it will run at its rated speed.

What will I notice from this? Will my computer be slower as if I had a board supporting 1333mhz FSB?

Reply to frankdavid

Why would your computer be slower if you are running a faster CPU at the correct speed? Are downgrading from a faster CPU? The 965 chipset officially supports up to FSB 1066 MHz, therefore FSB 1333 MHz is overclocked, but that isn't a cause for concern.

So you say, its good if i keep my current board and purchase only a new CPU(Q9650). Thank you for help! Just another question: Sapphire Radeon HD4890 OC is good for my board, isn't it?

As i said your board supports the new CPU but it will operate @ 1066MHZ FSB rather than 1333MHZ.
Btw why do u need a Q9650 ? get a Q6600 which has 1066FSB and OC it :)
And yes HD 4890 is a very good card :)

The P5B-E will support the 1333 FBS CPUs it will run at 1333.

I had the P5B Deluxe WiFi/AP and installed a X3350 in it and the CPU ran at correct speed. The only thing is the board runs at "Overclock Mode" The RAM deviders run off 1066(266) FBS IE: if you install a 1333 (333) FBS CPU the lowest RAM available will be 667 not 533.

Most of the ASUS P965 Chipset board will support 1333 FBS CPUs.

It wont run @ 1333MHZ because P5B-E supports max 1066MHZ FSB and if u look @ the link that i posted,ASUS says :
"Due to chipset limitation, 1333FSB processors can only run at a maximum speed of 1066FSB on this motherboard."

Just go to this page and you'll see that most FSB 1333 MHz CPUs are supported: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport [...] odel=P5B-E

Also Google for P5B-E FSB 1333 MHz and you'll find out that the first BIOS revision to support 1333 MHZ CPUs was released a long time ago. Some users have been overclocking their CPU by increasing the FSB clock up to 500 MHz (FSB 2000 MHz).

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews [...] board_p965

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/408/7 (where they confirm that the FSB clock is adjustable from 100 to 650 MHz).

What else do you need to be convinced?

I didnt say it isnt supported,i say it supports it but it can operate @ 1066 (Without OC).
Overclocking makes it possible to run @ higher FSBs such as 1333MHZ or more,i was talking about the stock mode :)

thanks for the links and infos :)
