I want to add a second CPU to my Dell PowerEdge 2900 server. My existing CPU is a Xeon 5160. I see many numbers out there associated with 5160 CPU's (sSpec, CPUID, etc). How do I know which 5160 to buy? Dell wants $1,300+, too rich for me. I can't get enough info off their web site to be sure about third party CPU's.

I would just look for Xeon's on newegg. Depending on the age of your server, I would think you might want an older 90nm Xeon. These might be something a more serious supplier would have. For $1300 you could build a new Quad core server, lol. Yeah, try newegg first, ya never know. Hope that helps.

I have a strong suspicion that you must match the stepping of the processors.
