My friend just had 2 Dish 322 receivers installed on 4 TVs. As far as I can
tell, the only way to get stereo or surround sound out of the units is to
use the RCA jacks on the back. Neither coax RF output transmits it. Can
anyone verify this? It is true for my SA 8000 box.

I had the same problem. Surround Sound comes fro the 520 receiver. The 322
I don't believe has the optical output it takes for 5.1 surround sound.
