I enjoy a number of graphics intensive games such as 9Dragons and Eve Online. What I have for a base computer is a Gateway 506GR.

EVE Online requirements for Premium Graphics package:
Recommended:
256MB GeForce 7950 or higher, ATi Radeon X1900 or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers

Minimum:
128 MB Shader Model 3.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce 6 class card or higher, ATi X1300 or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers

9Dragons requirements:
GeForce FX5900 128MB or higher

Gateway 506GR specs:

What I need is some idea of what exactly would work as an upgrade in this system without requiring me to replace the whole thing. It actually has 1.5GB of RAM and a better DVDRW drive. Otherwise its cherry.

Your system uses a PCIeX16 1.1 socket and has a 300w power supply. Your socket is compatible with all PCIeX16 2.0 cards and your best option is to add a HD4670 graphic card. It doesn't use much power (47 watts) and doesn't require additional power from the supply, just what it gets from the socket. Good choices would be this HIS card that exhausts hot air out the back of the case for $71 after rebate.

or perhaps this one with single slot cooling for $80 (i'd get the HIS personally, but measure for fit)

How do you figure power usage? The test shows much higher at full 3d rendering...
