Hello,

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Sapphire ATI HD 4850 1 GB.

I noticed that the Fan starts for a couple of seconds when the system starts and then turns off while the system still runs.
I tried the Overdrive feature it automatically starts up.
Is that normal?? Does this video card have an internal function that turns off the fan when it's not needed? (Please note that the GPU temp was 60 degrees C when the fan was down).

Thanks

No the fan should NEVER stop spinning all together. Something is wrong. It has a fan profile that will spin down when cooler, but 60C at idle it should be spinning away. I think they should idle around 50ish if it has a good cooler.

It automatically starts when it goes over 60 degrees, lowers the temperatures of a couple degrees and stops again.

That is weird. Hmm what does the CCC say when your fan is off? does it say it should be spinning? Also, can you manually change the fan speed in the CCC?

When it's off it says 0%. When it automatically starts approx. 39%. I can set it manually only if I start Overdrive. Is there any other solution?
Thanks.

Rivatuner will allow you to map the fan speed to temperature.
Me, I found that setting the fan on my 4870 to 35% through Overdrive keeps things cool and it`s not too loud.

I still think you should at least call Sapphire and ask them. I don't think it should have 0% fan till 60C. I think maybe the fan profile is screwed up. MAYBE they have a firmware flash that could fix the issue that they could send you. You never know.
