my compaq presario
R3000 laptop switches over to battery power when pluged in, and switches back when I disconect and and reconect the power adapter jack is this a problem with the power adapter or could it be something else?

It sounds as if you have a faulty connection possibly on the laptops jack. However it could also be other things such as a OS malfunction or dodgy power supply. Does it charge even If it doesnt show up on windows it is?

Plug it in with the battery removed, if it shuts down you have a faulty connection in the AC jack if it doesn't it's just your OS acting up.
