Hello,

I recently just build a new computer and been just putting it through some of the tests. I ran into an issue, in two games Team Fortress 2 and Guild Wars my frame rate is between 20 and 35 FPS. I'm running the game @ 1920x1080 (no aa, but high settings otherwise). My system is a Phenom 9500, 512 MB 9800GT, 8GB DDR2 800 Mhz, HD Audio running on Vista 64. My GPU seems to hit about 85C on load. My 3Dmark vantage score was 10504 on entry.

Now, my friend has an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, 512MB 8800GT, DDR2 4GB 1066 Mhz, Onboard Audio running on Vista 64 and he gets 45min in TF2 (normally at 60) and a locked 60 FPS in Guildwars. His 8800GT his about 75C temp on load. He doesn't want to run 3Dmark vantage because it makes him feel bad about his computer.

Any ideas if this a problem or is this the performace I should be expecting? I know his processor is going to be ~20% faster then mine generally in games and my GPU should be about the same as his in games.

Its the processor that holding the video back. Remember the cpu will always be more important the the graphics card because it will determine how fast your graphics card information can pass through. Its like trying to put a 16 foot high truck through a 15 foot bridge and we all know what happens lol

I have a q8200 2.3ghz with 9800gt sli my 3dmark06 score is 13000+
using 790i ultra mother board and 2gbddr3 ram no epp 2.0

Wow, 2 months since I posted this, lol. Yeah, the FPS issue in the two games TF2 and Guildwars was because of the CPU. After I disabled the TLB patch performance improved quite a bit in both games 10-15 FPS on average. TF2 was also patched to support multicore cpus and the FPS is now above 50 FPS at all times.

As I tried more and more current games like DoW2, Fallout 3, Fear 2 and Far Cry 2 the performance turned out to be very good as these games had support for multicore CPUs which Guildwars and TF2 didn't.

My performance issue stemmed from:
a) testing on older single threaded games
b) not knowing about the TLB patch for the 9500 CPU.
