Hi,

I have the opportunity to replace my Dish PVR 510 with a PVR 522 for $400.00
installed. Does anyone who has a 522 or had a 510 before have any advice?
I am hearing mixed reviews on the 522, ie bugs etc and not sure what to do,
ie wait?

Thanks, Rob

Hello Rob,

My mom and I have had the 522 for about two weeks now. (from Dish
Network). It works great. Haven't had any problems except with the
range on the UHF (TV 2) remote control. If you are going to BUY the 522,
call Dish first and make sure that they will activate it before you fork
over the cash! The dual receiver is very handy. Record two different
programs at the same time or watch one and record another. With either
TV you can watch anything that has been recorded. The pause live TV is
very handy if the phone rings or if someone knocks on your door.

The problem with the short range on the UHF remote was remedied by adding
a short peice of coaxe to the back of the reciever and positioning the
UHF remote recieving antenna at the front of the receiver.

This is my first experience with Dish and donot kn0ow what the 510 has to
offer. But, we are very pleased with the 522.

I am new to Dish, changing over from DirecTV this past
weekend to get some international channels, the extra
PVR (I have a 300 hour TiVo), and a fully functioning
2nd TV (with PVR) for not much money.

[I paid for the International Sat, but DirecTV did even offer
what I needed, and I pay a small fee for the PVR which I
didn't have for the 2nd TV.]

I love the DISH so far, even though the software has a few
small glitches.

(like no way to "set the record tuner #" different from the
default when recording in the future -- they know this and will
likely fix it. You can do this when doing "live" recording" and
you can go laboriously change the default right before setting
up recordings etc.)

My #2 remote is also "flaky" from the 2nd floor, 20' away with
little to interfere, so I will likely need to try the "coax extender"
trick which IS DOCUMENTED in the manual and suggested
by the previous poster.

It has one feature/bug that I both like and hate: It won't let you
change off a channel where you are not 'live', without confirmation;
this screws my TiVo if *I* forget and leave the TV "back in the
buffer." But, I can't tell you the number of times that I have
accidentally changed off a TiVo buffer that I really wanted to see,
but had not set to record (with record, TiVo works the same way.)

Good and bad -- mostly good probably.

It has one really weird problem -- every night it wants to reboot
to get the new downloads (program code or guide) updated and
THEN IT puts itself in a mode that requires user input before it
can be changed.

TiVo of course has no idea the [stupid] receiver is waiting for
(human) input.

Neither DirecTV nor TiVo required this reboot each night -- and
even when TiVo reboots after updates it goes right back to what
it is supposed to be doing at that time of day.

Picture seems slightly better but I wouldn't swear to it in court.
