Stream Processors

What are Stream Processors? Just doing some research on GPUS. Not buying just like looking at reviews and specifications. And I came across "Stream Processors". What are they. They have a big difference between different cards. So I thought maybe that they have different units of measure for it. For example the ATI 4670 has 320 Stream Processing Units in the Stream Processors category. The Geforce 8600 has 32 in the Stream Processors category. So I was thinking that maybe the 320 Stream Processing Units in the ATI 4670 is equal to the "32" from the Geforce 8600. Or maybe the ATI 4670 just has 100 more in the Stream Processors category.
