4870 x2 AntiAliasing issues

Hi Guys,

I was hoping that i am not the only one that is experiencing issues with my
HIS HD 4870 x2 Graphics card.

When i got the card i was blown away by the quality of the shaders and wasn't really very analytical about it.

Then i started to play my games and i first played DeadSpace and i started noticing
that the graphics are very rough as if the AA was set to -4 !!!

I thought may be i am imagining or may be it is the game. So i tried Far Cry 2 , Fallout 3 , NFS Undercover, and GTAIV and all with the same result. I started to freak out.

I was using a 46 Inc Sony Bravia as my display so i thought perhaps it is too much for the card so i plugged back my 22'' Monitor and still getting the same result.

Downloaded the latest drivers ,Updated my Bios...and nothing.

I then read some articles about my CPU bottle necking the GPu which i know is Bull Sh*&t. But i overclocked my CPU & RAM & GPU with the same problem.

I also Changed my OS from VISTA Ultimate SP1 32 Bit to Vista Ultimate SP1 64 Bit and still no difference.

My 3DMARK Vantage Scores are good but the overall AA is terrible its basically unbearable. I will attach a couple of screenshots.
GPU 16000 @ GPU 800MHZ & Memory 900MHZ @ Temp 46 degrees on load [WatercooledEK GPU Block]

I am just losing it as i have been saving for ages to get my rig and say goodbye to the hit and miss gaming experience, but here i am having everybody's worst nightmare !

I've tried both and still the same issue.

Could i just be unlucky and i just bought a faulty card ?

If i get to return the card i will get a GTX 295 though i've always been an ATI Guy
Had an ATI 9250 Pro Then Ati All in wonder XVE 800 then a HD 3850 and then this 4870 x2.

What make is your 4870 x2 ? do you get any rough edges ?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

That definitely doesn't look like the AA is working. What driver version are you using? My 4870x2 antialiases beautifully with Catalyst 8.11 (it's a Sapphire card)

Something is odd about that. What are your 3d settings in Catalyst like?

IS the a way you could send me some screenshots of deadspace on your config or any of the games i've listed please.

I tried to force the AA within catalyst and still having the same issue.

I have tried to use the application settings and it is still the same problem.

Have you used 3dmark vantage ?

Yes I have - as for dead space, I don't own it. I have Far Cry 2 though, so I can take a shot of that.

thanks man, could you also post your Catalyst settings.

What Rig are you using.

In 3DMARK Vantage, in the Jane Nash test are the edges rought during the test ?

I could post a screenshot of it when running on my PC- the edges are very FUZZY.

I would be gratefull if you could take a screenshot " of the scene where she starts running right before she jumps into the water "

very funny that the nvidia card has the same problem on your system, it has me stumped, have you tried a clean install of windows (not a upgrade), the only thing i can think of, is to try it in a friend's computer.

Yes i was initially running on VISTA 32 bit then i installed a fresh copy of 64 Bit,..

Would it be because the 8800 GTS is a weak card..

I'm losing sleep over this :S

Just To Post More Updates on this Issue to help others that may have the same issue.

I have tried My Card in a friends Dell 700 and thee problem was pretty much the same with Both The ATI 4870 x2 & The 8800 GTS.

I then happen to find a demo of Call of Juarez that came with my Card. I Installed it and the results were incredible on both cards.

There was also a Stranglehold demo included, however when i tried it ..the graphics were terrible once again on both cards.

I can to discover that it is a Directx9 Problem apparently most of the games are on directx 9 very few on directx 10.

Any Directx 10 Game runs incredible on the card... Thought the 3DmarkVantage anti aliasing is still present during the DX10 Test but not in the Dx10 Games.

I will install a fresh copy of DX9 on my pc tonight and test the quality again on the Dx9 Games like

Brothers in Arms
Dead Space
GTAIV

>>>>Shame that these games are still on Dx9 and Dx11 is knocking on our door already.

I will keep you guys posted

I Have wasted 3 weeks of testing since i put my pc together..
Have not even played a game on it yet.

have you tried the 9.1 driver

I will just got the driver today.

I also was browsing DeadspaceScreenShots @ 1920 x 1080 and they were really lame.

How could us gamers put up with it !!!!! EA stinks Same as when they Had the GodFather game out with a mouse control problem.

February 4, 2009 8:14:43 AM

Okay Guys.

Tested 9.1 new 4870 Driver and a fresh install of the latest DX9.

Results were still terrible on Deadspace ...Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway & GTAIV & STranglehold

Very disappointing. Now unfortunately i don't have a GTX295 to see what Nvidia has to offer on this problem

though an 8800 GTS is still giving the same result.

Probably we just have to live with the crappy outdated DX9 that still runs most of the latest releases.

Very Disappointed.

Yeah i wasted a lot of time also troubleshooting this issue, it is less visible in DX10 games but crap on all Dx9 games. It is not your PC & not your monitor either.

If you read my thread and all the tests that i have conducted it'll say it all......I've wasted £$hit loads of money and y rig is no where near where i want it to be.

I have finally given up and returned the 4870 x2 to the supplier and they will test it. then if i don't get the results i want i will just ditch ATI forever and get a GTX 295.

and i would have wasted my mony on the 4870 x2 waterblock Grrrr because i cant return it once i've used it.

And i am after paying 35 Euros to send the damn thing back .....

What a waste of time and money.
February 9, 2009 7:59:59 AM

Oh and just to say as i was playing Assasin's Creed which is a DX10 Game i started experiencing the same crap again....where all house rooftops getting jagged on me.

But only the distant ones once i get closer to a structure the edge becomes smooth.

Crap experience...........................................

I'm starting to think the same, but what would you do if your gaming experience is as i have posted earlier (The ScreenShots)

CJL>>>3DMARK VANTAGE Screenshots were perfect.

The Two HIS 4870 x2 i have were purchase together from the same shop...very high possibility that HIS are simply crap cards thought the reviews were good. Now as to the 8800 GTS i don't know if it would qualify as a tester againist a dual GPU card.

So i am giving ATI the benifit of doubt that it is just the case of Faulty HIS Cards or something.

Oh and just to add i had a HD3850 >> never had any anti aliasing issues running the likes of Fear and Crysis .& Assassin's Creed.

That is why i know there is something not right here.

This is serious bro because i believe that some of the gamers out there think that jagged edges are normal...but they are not.

Also

RaZZOr has a 4830 ..and Crysis is running terrible on his system... Though ran perfectly on a HD3850.

We are spending big bucks on these cards so if there are faulty or not doind what they should be doing then..we might as well get a Playstation3.

It is very Frustrating.

the only possible solution i can think of without being at your house is the catalyst controls. go in there and look up the anti aliasing option and set it to visual over performance. other than that, you cannot do much at all. im running dead space on my pc full resolution and textures and what not but the anti aliasing really sucks - especially since my system can really shine with AA enabled.

honestly though dude, your card is AMAZING. those 4870x2 can pretty much chomp everything thrown at them. if you notice subtle edges while playing its probably the game itself, not your graphics cards. mess with settings, try to find new configurations - in fallout 3 for example they have high textured environments that require a lot of CPU power but they make the game look 10x better. look around, you will find a solution young grasshopper.

Well i have been messing around with it trust me, it is really shame to have to put up with this !!

After spending a lot of cash on a supposedly monster GPU card.

I'll keep you all posted.

I Know , it is very strange i only loaded BioShock and playing it on max settings /1080 P no problem what so ever..but again it is a dirext x 10 game .

My Card is back with the vendor and they will run tests. so i will post the outcome.
July 21, 2009 4:03:48 AM

i have a single 4870 and the last 3 months have been amazing, it runs everything with ease at the resolutions i play, however after installing fear 2, my video card no longer does anti aliasing or motion blur in fear 2, or ut 3, or aoe3, and many other games, every other option apears to be working fine, i know exactly how frustrated this guy is because ive studied video card technology for a long time and am a certifiable pixel whore, and ive reinstalled all sorts of drivers, and spent hours trying every possible combination, i find it very strange, im doubtful that something mechanically would cause this, i doubt its a hardware issue, that my vide card would fail cooincidentally after installing fear 2. . . . im lost.

either way im never installing fear 2 again, if i have to format over this ill be extremely pissed.

im running a 5000+ dual core amd
3gb ram ddr800
