ECC memory not required, but allowed.

Do you plan on overclocking the 5520's?

Please post here whether you succeeded. I intent on buying the same setup, but only if I can OC the cheaper XEON's to good speeds.

YG,

It's going to have 8 cores and 16 HT's. Even at stock speeds it will decimate all.

5520 stock speed is only 2.26 Ghz. So for programs (like most games) that do not use more as 4 cores a setup with one Core i7 at 3.2 Ghz will probably be a lot faster.

Everything that really uses multicore will run a lot faster on this machine.

Can you run this board with one processor (with the intent of adding one later as prices drop)?

Yes, runs O.K. with one CPU but you can install only 3 DIMMS. That's not much of a limitation if you use 4GB DIMMS.

i heard some of the less expensive Xeon socket 1366's don't have hyper-threading, but the 5520 does have HT.

i was looking at the 5520. apparently there's an 80 watt version and a 60 watt version. i wonder if the 60 watt version OC's better.
