Hi everyone,

I'm trying to choose b/w these 2 boards for an I7 build. They are both the same price. I'm leaning towards the Rampage II Gene because of better sound, easier OC and possibly better quality. I don't think i would be losing any functionality that I would need or miss. Is there any compelling reason to choose one over the other?

Thanks for your help.

THe GENE is a Micro-ATX board so you loose a PCI-E slot and some others. REALLY, besides the audio, that is the only difference. They are both 8+2 phase power and pretty much matching specs. Honestly I took the P6T because the GENE was not out, but I have an X-fi card already. The onboard X-Fi of the GENE is compelling. The only other one I see is the Rampage II Extreme.

Honestly the audio might sell it for me to be honest, if you are ok with loosing expansion slots. I'd take the GENE. I definitely like it for a lan box style case.

I'm not sure about the P6T, but doesnt the RAMPAGE II's have a thicker PCB to increase durability when adding large HSF's. I ordered the Extreme, and I do know that has a thick PCB for heavy HSF's.

@Jay2tall: werent you waiting for the i5? I never knew you already had the i7. LOL
I kinda waited a little longer when the i7 came out for more products to be compatible with it.

Why are you going from an i7 to an i5?

Not sure about the Extreme mobo's being thicker. But the reason for this would be to have thicker traces on the mobo, not for large HSF's. All of the large HSF's have back plates that distribute the weight evenly so that is not an issue. I know the Gigabyte Ultra- Durable's have more copper in them. I'm sure it helps a little but, but they market the crap out of it. I don't see it being REALLY necessary

^^
Dragonfang, Yeah i have an i7. I was just throwing my $.02 at an i5 thread. I wouldn't have gone for the i5 anyways, I want the highend stuff. You gotta check people's "more info" and then "member configuration"

Thanks for the input. I think you've helped me confirm that the Rampage will work best for me. Do you think there might be a reason I would need more than 2 PCI-E slots? I don't think i would ever consider tri-sli/xfire.

The only think I would say is a better sound card, but since it has an x-fi integrated setup, I think you'd be set.

Well, there is a chance you could go Quad SLI hehe...

Jay your spec is very simular to mine. I love it, i wouldn't go another route if i had to do it over. I had to make the same choice as the original poster, but I heard of more problems with the rampage II gene so I went with the P6T, even though there was several problems posted all over about it as well.. Highest temps my PC seen with Turbo on, HT on, was 71c (reading with realtemp). Using a lapped thermalight ultra 120 extreme 1366 & lapped cpu, with artic 5 silver.

I have some high ambient temps though. Whenever I take my PC over to my buddies basement everything DROPS.
