I want to replace an Asus A8N SLI Premium mb/AMD X2 4600 CPU with a Asus M4A78-E AM2+/AM3 AMD 790GX and and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 Kuma 2.7GHz Socket AM2+. This system runs WinXP. I've upgraded systems enumerable times and never had the thought of trying this. Is it possible to load the drivers for the new MB on the current system, then switch out the hardware and not have to do a full reinstall? The motherboards having the same manufacturer may or may not be helpful. What are peoples thoughts on this?

Thanks!! :D

The chipset is more important than the manufacturer. Loading the drivers won't work, but it might be possible to copy them and make the required registry modifications to load them at boot. Make sure you have a good full backup before doing anything.

You should look into using SysPrep.

It's a tool used to roll out an OS to multiple, possibly different, hardware platforms.

In order to use it when swapping out a motherboard, you need to run it BEFORE powering down the system. It unloads all the hardware drivers. You then change the motherboard, reconnect all your hardware, and boot up. SysPrep finds all the new hardware and loads drivers.

Search google for "Changing motherboard without reloading windows" for more information.

enumerable - capable of being counted
innumerable - not capable of being counted, countless
