Screen Flashed Blue Now Wont Load XP

Hello,
i was using the net then my screen flashed blue for a split second and the the computer restarted and now wont load past the veryfying dmi pool data screen just before the windows logo i have checked the ram and the hard drives i was thinking of doing a windows repair or fresh install but dont want to lose any of my stuff just hoping there is a easier way have searched the net and cant find a solution i am running xp home sp3.
