The socket type for the board says AM2/AM2+, though it also says it can support the X3 series of processors.
Do I need to buy an adapter for the processor? I'm so confused!

CPU:
AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black 2.8GHz AM3 4000FSB/7.5MB Processor

Mobo:
ASRock A780GXE/128M AMD 780G AM2+ ATX Mainboard (Video/Audio/Gigabit LAN)

no the phenom2 am3 has 1 pin less than a am2+ and is backward compatible AND has support for AM2+ ddr2 or AM3 DDR3 YOU MIGHT NEED TO UPDATE THE BIOS THOU
I SAW THIS BOARD ASUS CHEAPER
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] -_-Product

THESE ARE A BETTER CHIPSET NEWER WITH THE 750 SB SOUTHBRIDGE AND ATI 3300 ONBOARD GRAPHICS + CHEAPER
