OC = Less FPS

So, I overclocked a E6550 Intel to 3.45 GHZ the temperature is not over 70C. I ran prime 95 and other tests for hours without running into errors. The problem is when I had this E6550 at 2.33 I was getting twice the FPS in some cases on the same game when the processor was at the default settings. Everything is set to auto. The voltages for this processor are 0.85V – 1.5V mine running at 1.4V. What causes the processor to do this?

When I ran 3Dmark my score for CPU jumped a lot higher obviously because of 2.33 VS 3.45, but why does my audio crackle? Why are my FPS lower? I am on a 64 bit OS XP also. Does the same on Vista 64.

I wanted to upgrade to a Q9650 and if I overclocked that would the same thing end up happening? Would I get lower FPS in my games?

i have never heard of anyone getting lower FPS due to an overclock. this post makes no sense at all. let me put it in another way just to tell you how stupid this post is:

i traded my civic in for a ferrari and it does not go nearly as fast as my civic.

????????

I can empathise with the OP in some way. My E6600 encodes video faster at stock than at 3.4GHz, which is a 1GHz clock speed difference. It's likely that memory timings played some part, but it's still odd. Note that it is fastest somewhere in between, around 3.0-3.1GHz

Did you ever think that the data sending was unstable? Yes, I know I am a complete idiot hope your esteem is higher.

Isn't this a PSU problem? Due the OC the PSU can't pull it anymore and makes the CPU clock back.

Seems more logical to me? Maybe you can tell us what kind of PSU you're running?

I had this clock for well over a month everything worked fine all was great. I have a 850 watt PSU gameXstream if you need a more detailed description let me know.

And why did my audio randomly start crackling with any application I run now.

Is it onboard audio? Because if so try downclocking the CPU and see if that stops the audio crackling. OCing very high (especially over 1GHz+) can do some weird things to components other than the CPU.

If that doesn't work, have you tried the latest drivers?

I have, something to do with power is being strained too much. Like the time I ran my CPU at 3Ghz, lower 3d mark score than stock (65 TDP max ;) ) and I killed some caps (they burst into flames)

I tried downclocking still does it now. Uninstalled drivers and got the newest ones. Latency is not a problem just starting doing this tested vista 64, xp 64 still have the problem. Even when playing music and just moving a window causes the audio to crackle.

I am surprised no one asked...
P5E3 Deluxe X38 775
850 PSU
ddr3 1333
9800 GX2

Yes, the wireless driver is disabled still causes crackle.

Did you check your PCI-E? Sometimes when you overclock, the PCI-E port gets set at x1 instead of x16. This will affect the performance greatly. To fix it, just set your PCI-E port to like 101 rather than 100 or auto.
