I turn on my newly assembled homebuilt system (specs below); it's so new that I'm installing the OS from a clean-install disc (Windows Vista 64 bit), I get the grey Windows installing progress bar....then before it finishes the computer shuts down. When I turn it back on I get get the message from the last boot "Processor Thermal Trip". But all my fans are on full, it's a cool 68/70 degrees in my place, and the computer hasn't even been on for more than 1 minute before shut down.

I felt the blades turning on the processor fan (ouch), so that's working. I tried going into the BIOS (F2 right when I turn on computer), but I couldn't find the readout on the temperature to see what's happening.

Specs:
Tower - Antec P182 Mid Tower case
Mobo - Intel P45
Processor - boyfriend's old processor, a Intel Core 2 Duo E4400, in pristine condition to the eye
PSU - Antec 650W
Hard drive - Seagate Barracuda 250GB
Graphics - ASUS 1 GB Radeon 4850
RAM - 2x 1GB OCZ Reaper DDR3 sticks

did you clean the old thermal paste from the heatsink and put new paste on there when installing the heatsink/fan? Also was it securely installed? the pushpins can be a P.I.T.A.

The only time I've had my CPU do that was when I installed my Freezer 7 Pro on my old E2160 and apparently only 1 pin was secure(and left it dangling) but if it has no TIM or only a little of the old stuff, it could do that as well. Or the pushpins aren't completely secure.

Since you sound new to this, l'm going to repeat the previous poster's question: did you properly apply a thermal grease or a thermal pad to the interface between the CPU and the heatsink you used? Since the CPU is being reused, you *must* clean all of the thermal compound off the CPU and reapply a new thermal interface compound.

I suspect it's the pushpins not seating properly or coming loose.

If you have the clearance in your case, then do yourself a favor and install the XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler with the XIGMATEK ACK-I7751 Retention Bracket.

Your temps will be so low you will have to OC it.

Note:
When applying thermal paste with the Xigmatek cooler, apply a thin layer across the CPU IHS (top) or across the whole base of the heatsink. The paste won't spread properly through contact because of the gaps between the heatpipes and the base.

You guys were exactly right!!

The pushpin on one side was loose, soon as I tightened it up and turned the pin, no more problem. Well...there's a new problem but I'll start a new thread 'cuz that's a totally different issue.
