Blue screen during reformat / reinstall

Last response: in Windows XP

This issue is happening on a buddy's Compaq.
It was randomly crashing so he ran a restore of sorts which deleted his OS off of the HD.

When he loaded his boot disc to attempt to reformat and reinstall Windows XP he gets the blue screen of death.

I am in the process of gathering more information from him as this is quite vague.. but if anyone has any ideas of what may the underlying cause please let me know.

At this point I don't know if it's something in the BIOS or if there is something corrupted or if there is any other way to wipe the HD to try to install Windows again.

You should perform a full memory test such as the free version of MemTest86. Memory problems are a common cause of crashes and blue screens during Windows installation.
