Benchmarking advice needed

What is the best way to benchmark a PC? I am interested in overclocking my PC, but I do not have any accurate way of knowing how it is performing at the moment, or after overclocking.

There seems to be so many benchmarking options, too many to try them all, and too confusing for a beginner.

I have tried several of them but end up with just another number, or a bunch of numbers.
Nothing to compare the numbers with no advice on how to improve performance.

Is there a good starting place for benchmarking?

Try Sisoftware sandra you can compare your bench mark to other systems

Now it seems the most widely used is 3DMark Vantage... Although a new DX11 Benchmark is coming out soon from Futuremark.

EDIT: Or Unigine Heaven =]

OK. I tried 3DMark Vantage and I get a score of 10753

I am pretty sure that this isn't such a great score given my pc specs, but how do I know what score I should be getting?

And how do I use the score to interpret what I need to do to improve the performance of the PC?

What are your specs and I can tell if that is a good score or not.

The specifications for my PC are as follows.

Antec 850W Trupower Quattro
Core i7 920 cpu with stock fan
Gigabyte GA EX58-UD5 motherboard
OCZ Reaper 4Gb Kit DDR3
2 x 1Tb Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD's in RAID0
Asus HD4870 1Gb Dark Knight
Asus HD4870 1Gb Glaciator

The score of 10753 was obtained using one 4870 card.

I have just increased the score to 16723 by using both cards in Crossfire mode.
