Hi,

I have to configure a new low end PC for my cousin. I was thinking of the processor as it has to be a sub-$50 processor. I decided that it would either be an Intel Celeron 430 1.8Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 4400+. I need help in choosing which is better and if I should consider any other processor? It has to be below $50.

Thanks.

I'd go with the Athlon x2; you should be able to get a decent MB for under $100 that later on can be upgraded to a Phenom II x4 (or x3).

The X2 4400+ is the better of the two.I have one in a system and I have been able to overclock it to 2.8ghz stable.Although for temp reasons I'm currently running it at 2.5ghz.It is one of four systems I currently have running on my in house network.Goodluck.

Which will be a mb for $100 appropriate for this? What will be the mb at say around $50 for this?
Thanks for the replies.

Look for one that says am2 and am2+ on it.
That way you will have the option to upgrade later on.

Not real familar with AMD boards, but one chipset (790?) has pretty good (for builtin) graphics. Since you said "low spec", that would save you some money.
