My old computer running XP crashed. Bought new computer running Windows 7 64bit and would like to transfer all my data from the old hard drive from other computer. It is a Serial ATA and my new computer are all SATA 2 connectors. I purchased and external Bay Storage which plugs into a USB 2 port. I tried reading it but it just shows the volume of the drive. What am I doing wrong so I can transfer the data onto my new computer's HD.

The old drive boot sector might be damaged when xp got crashed. You got to restore files with some tool, since you are not able to migrate your old files directly from the old drive when pc not reading it.

To restore files, i would recommend http://www.icare-recovery.com/ i had used this program and it worked for my failing hard disk and restored files.

Freeware recuva http://www.recuva.com but sometimes only restore recent deleted files. i used it for recent undelete and useful.

Or some tool from other vendors like getdata http://www.getdata.com/
