Hey guys

I had a nice old system with a 4000+ and a Gigabyte GA-K8N ultra SLI motherboard.
Recently, I moved it across to a new case and installed a new PSU.

My old power supply did not have the white wire ( -5V ) on the 24 pin ATX . The one I put in did.
Worked fine for about an hour, then I switched off, unplugged, connected CD drives which I forgot to do earlier, switched on and all I get is no visible display with long continous beeps (RAM error according to manuals)

1. Is it possible having this extra -5V connection actually fried my mobo?
2. Would a newer motherboard be able to cope with having a useless -5V connector?
3. Can I trust this PSU, is it likely to have caused the problem?

Attempts made to correct problem:
- Change back to old (working) PSU
- All configurations of RAM - single stick, different slots, different pairs, working RAM that wasn't in PC at time of breaking
- CMOS reset by jumpers / battery removal and reinsertion
-Disconnecting HDDs/CD/DVD drives
-Checking connections were tight

Any help or guidance appreciated mucho
Thanks guys
Hawk

As long as the MB beeps it is not dead. The beeps indicate the MB and CPU are working. Try reseating the video card or using a different video card. Check all the connectors from the hardware to the MB. Is the 12v 4/8 pin power lead from the power supply plugged in to the MB to supply 12v power to the CPU.

Tried reseating graphics card, connections are sound and thoroughly checked :)

Not even posting.

Main question is "Can I trust this PSU?"

Thanks for your reply
