I built a system about 4 years ago using a cheap CompUSA 400W ATX PSU and I want to give it to my girlfriend but she complains that it's too loud. I did some messing around and figured out that most of the noise is coming from the PSU. I tried looking on Newegg for a 400W ATX PSU but the reviews scared me away from all of them. There are some good 400W PSUs there, but they are all ATX12V/ATX 2.0. Can anyone recommend a good and relatively quiet ATX PSU?

First any ATX12V/ATX 2.0 power supply will work for you. Corsair is making some nice PSU's these days.

Corsair is an excellent choice. Anandtech just did a review of 20 low wattage psu's. The Corsair psu's did very well. They are rock solid and very stable.

Ok, so I ordered an ATX12V power supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703015) and the plug doesn't fit! I guess the ATX12V power supply has a 24-pin connector and my old motherboard which was made for a regular ATX power supply has a 20-pin connector.

So I guess I need an adapter.

I found two on Newegg:

This one is cheap, but the description says it's intended to adapt a 20-pin PSA to a 24-pin motherboard.

This one is more expensive but the description says it's intended to adapt a 24-pin PSA to a 20-pin motherboard.

So my question is, are these two adapters actually different, or do they really do the same thing but the product descriptions are just written differently. Either way, why are the costs so radically different? They're both the same connectors and same wires, even if they are configured a little differently.
