On board sound

I don't know how to test with a multimetere or if it's even possible. Go into your bios and make sure onboard audio is enabled. If you built this computer, go to the motherboard manufacturer's web site and download the necessary audio drivers. If this is a purchased system (Dell, gateway, HP,...) go to their web site and download the audio drivers from there.

Also, check the device manager and make sure your audio device shows up properly.

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

Since it is now possible to buy an external 5.1 sound system USB device for only £20 in the UK and therefore far cheaper everywhere else, it's hardly worth opening up the case to diagnose the fault. Onboard sound devices are notoriously unreliable - even a PCI card would be better than those but the USB models are, in my view, better.
