How to hook up second internet connection to AT&T DSL

I was told to buy an adapter and router to hook up my second pc at home to the internet. We have AT&T DSL installed on our main computer. When installing the adapter, it shows that it's receiving excellent and the router shows connected but can't get on internet. What am I doing wrong? cb
