I have a Dell XPS 410 with a bad motherboard. The machine is 2 1/3 years old with the warranty expiring in January. I looking at options for replacing the motherboard. Here is the base configuration:

4 X Dual In-line Memory Module, 1G 667M, 128X64, 8, 240, 2RX8
1 Processor, 6600, 2.4, 4M, Core Duo-conroe, Burn 2
nvidia 7900 256 MG, GS HMGA14 video card

Does anyone have any suggestions on a new non-dell motherboard and which would fit in the XPS 410 case or suggest a new case to reuse the above parts list?

Thank you in advance

David

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!...... it's a mini BTX system.

Yeah the BTX standard never did work out. Anyway I would say go with a P45 board and a good ATX case. With a good aftermarket cooler you should be able to get a good overclock out of your CPU. It may be past time to replace your video card if you're going to be doing any gaming. What's your budget? The cheapest thing to do is just get a motherboard off eBay or something. Finding a new LGA 775 miniBTX board is going to be pretty hard to do

The Antec 300 is a very good basic case for 54.99

If you want something a little more flashy I'm partial to the Raidmax SMILODON

RAIDMAX SMILODON ATX-612WB $69.99

Since it could be your PSU that killed your motherboard the SMILODON with a semi decent 500W PSU is only a few bucks more

RAIDMAX SMILODON Extreme Black ATX-612WEBP $79.99

I also like the X-Dreamer series cases, but of course the PSUs they come with are kinda useless :D.

APEVIA X-Dreamer II ATXB4KLW-BK $69.99

As for a decent motherboard this ASRock is pretty good

ASRock P45XE $89.99

But if you can spend more then you may want to consider an Ultra Durable Model from Gigabyte or an ASUS.

I would like to keep the budget down but I'm not opposed to spending extra. Also, I would like to use the CPU and RAM from the 410.

I have already purchased a new video card - nvidia 9800 GT and a new Raptor WD 10000 RPM Sata drive for troubleshooting the broken system. (Another story). I plan on using them with this updated system.

The cases above all look like good options. I have a follow-up question(s): Will my CPU and RAM work with the suggested motherboard? Could you suggest a Gigabyte or ASUS motherboard? I will lean towards a better quality motherboard.

Thank You,

David
