Look at a PII based x3 like the 710 or 720BE. Those two cpus also retail closer to the price of the Intel e7400 also. At least in the states on newegg.
I would lean towards a Phenom II x3 system.
Look for some benchmarks with the app you intend to use for your work. See how it fares on each arch. and how well it scales as the cores go up.
If you're looking at an AMD CPU choose the Phenom II X3 710 or 720. Those two CPUs are a great value, and look even more attractive when you consider that you have a chance to unlock the 4th core and get even more value for it. Of course you need a board with ACC, and a bit of luck, for that.
