Used 8800GT for 80$

Hello guys.

I've been trying to save money to buy the GTX280/285... but it's been real hard when you have bills to pay, car insurance, the whole lot. And the state of the global economy doesn't really allow money to be wasted on "superficial" things like computer hardware. It's the truth, people.

When I built my system 3 months ago, I skimped on the GPU as I thought I would later be able to get a better one as the budget then only allowed me to come home with a cheap card.

So here are the basics of my specs:

Asus P5Q Pro

Intel E8400

XFX 8600gt 512MB DDR2.

The model i'm considering buying is the ASUS 8800GT 512 DDR3 GLACIATOR.

Considering this, and knowing I could get it for 80$ (with original box, cables, bundle, etc), is this a good purchase? I know the 8600gt is just plain slow, especially my DDR2 version... I know the 8800GT is a great improvement over the 8600gt, but still, is it a capable card for today's games? I never go beyond 1280*1024... I'm just comfortable @ that resolution.

What do you guys think?

Cool. But, just in case I wanted to crank up the res on some game, for some reason, say like 1600x1200, it would still be up to the task right? It's the max res my 19" can achieve. But I just like to play @ 1280x1024, mostly.

8800GT is starting to show its age in modern games but its still good. At $80 I suppose its worth it, its still like $110 new.

Here is the comparison between the 8800GT, HD 4850 and the 9600GT.

Like ohiou_grad_06 said, the 9600GT is a very good card, and the 8800GT is even faster, despite being older.

The 8800GT is consistently faster than the 9600GT (no surprise here), but it never falls far behind the 4580.

For 80$ I'm gonna get a really nice card

As I said, the 8800gt is not the fastest card, but I know the card I had before my 9600gt was a 7300LE. But it is a night and day difference. I think you will be a very happy camper. And if you have an sli board, then you could later on add a second to do sli.
