Ok so recently since my move from my old house we had to change ISP's. I went from Cox Cable to ughhhhh shall I say.....Sprint/Centel. This ISP is more of a city owned thing since it is a little bit of a small town....Anyhow before our move which was only 15 minutes away our cox cable service was AMAZING. I was running a voice server (Ventrilo) which a friend of mine from Canada was wanting me to do...She could connect just fine to both my voice server Teamspeak as well...Up until the move going to Sprint/Centel I noticed she couldnt connect at all period to my own hosted by me website...Or the voice servers...I did make sure ports were fine and that my internal IP was set for the port forwarding...I know quite alot when it comes to this stuff but until now she cannot connect..As I was saying when I do a ping to certain sites or even her IP address through the Command Prompt it was say the "Request Timed Out". Several sites I pinged like google and others popped this message up. And now Im really mad because yes I have heard sprint/centel has some very crappy net. Which I noticed the decrease in speeds. Also to say that I live in the woods a bit not really one house its a neighborhood along with others maybe 30 secs down a hill which shouldnt be a problem but still. We do have bad cell phone reception back here but that really doesnt matter at the moment. Anyhow what really makes me mad is that Cox Cable states on the phone that they dont go out this far which I know is a load of bull since I see about 20 of there vans out here a day and on the highway near us. And right now there is no other ISP I can switch to at the time. I had my friend which I was talking about earlier do a ping test which somehow she could connect to me but had VERY bad packet loss I believe she said it was about 70%. This could be why shes having troubles. But for some reason I cant ping her or any other site or IP. Is there any kind of Temp fix to this? Or am I going to have to live with it for a long time or until I move? I feel empty not being able to voice with her anymore :S Anyhow thanks for the time you took reading this :) I am not an awsome essay write or typer so dont criticize me. LOL....Also I guess I didn't say BUT, when we moved the ISP said that we could bring our old Modem which is a wireless modem FROM Cox itself and our Linksys router of course. I dont know if this could be the issue or not but I would appreciate any help :)

Thanks

Since you posted this, I presume that you have access to the Internet, but you can't ping anything outside of your own network. Is that correct? How are you connecting to the Internet? Can you ping your ISP's servers?

I have a wireless connection to my router. I can ping certain places but nothing that can go into canada or anywhere out near the westside of the US. I can ping my ISP since there not that far from here. But my friends can ping me but they get great packet losses and different hops just to get to me. Im simply just trying to get my friend to be able to connect to my servers and website that I run. Like I said shes from canada and when I try pinging her I just get request timeouts. It would be awsome if you could help me, I am in dire need of a fix and since it seems your the only one interested in this youd be a lifesaver :). If you need anymore info just email at zach_orberson@hotmail.com or you could reply again here all is good :)

Perform a tracert to a few sites to see where it fails. You're probably going through a backbone router where ICMP traffic has been disabled, but that doesn't prevent connections when the IP address is known either directly or via a DNS. Ping has nothing to do with distance. From Canada I can ping systems that are anywhere in the world, but a ping to a local system will fail if the firewall blocks ICMP traffic.

Does your ISP block ports? Are you using a static or a dynamic IP address?

I sent you a private message.
