So I'd appreciate it if I could get some help picking out components for my first build. I realize that this is probably a pretty high end system for a first build, but I need a high end system as it will run mostly multi-threaded engineering applications. If i wasn't building my own, I'd probably be buying something from XIComputer who has stocked all our labs in the past. I just think it will be fun (and about half the price) to do it myself. In any event, I'm looking for a quad core system running at about 3 GHZ on Linux which will use VMWare to run Windows as necessary. For the gamer in me, I'd like to throw a nice video card in it that wont be obsolete in the coming couple years. I'll be running dual displays @ 1920x1200 so I'll need 2 DVI ports. Below I've made a list of some things I think are decent for my build. Any input would be appreciated. One of the things I am least confident in is my power supply selection and how I should go about doing that. [IE: Which have the right connections for the components I am selecting and the correct amperages]

Thanks for the advice. I've been doing quite a bit more learning and realize just how far off base I was on my first crack at this. Currently, I am looking at a setup as follows:

Antec 1200 Case
ASUS P6T Deluxe
EVGA GTX 285 SSC
Corsair 750TX
Core i7 920
Corsair Dominator Memory DDR3 1600 6GB
Western Digital 7200 RPM 1TB HD
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme RT 1366
Vista (64 bit)
Ubuntu (64 bit)
Flight Sim X

As I said in my earlier post, I am a newbie to the max who researches things to death until he is absolutely sure he has some idea what he is doing, so everything I'm doing here is based off of the post above and boatloads of Google. I like the bang-for-the-buck of the i7 920, so thats why I went that way. I'm looking at the functions I've listed earlier as well as some FSX (MSFT flight sim x) which apparently doesn't work well with a dual GPU setup. So thats the base of what I've seen. I am planning to see what I can get from overclocking, so I'm going to try to get some good cooling from the Antec and the TRUE.

I'm pretty confident in my ability to purchase the parts and open the boxes, but there was one post (that I can't find now) that said the TRUE will not fit with the corsair dominator's heatsink on a 1366 board. If this is true, what other memory would you recommend? I think memory has more options of the same performance than the TRUE vs its competitors.

Also, [and this probably don't belong on this board, but it seems pointless to create a new post for what is probably a very simple answer I cannot find], is there a straight-up formula for what your memory speed should be based on how much your processor is overclocked? [If it doesn't belong here, just let me know and I'll make another topic elsewhere]

Again, I really want to thank the more experienced members here for walking me through this. These forums are very helpful.

Thanks.

you made really good choices but for the memory i would get OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ3P1600LV6GK - Retail(it is cheaper and better and has better timings)

as for the gtx 285 i would get the non clocked version and overclock it myself (cheaper and better)

also i read some where here in the forum that windows 7 RC will be available for free download after a week or something so if i were you i would download it and wait until the final release and buy myself a copy)
