I am looking at starting to build a new system and I was wondering if AM2+ could support all Phenom 2 CPUs (including x3s. If they can, what are the advantages of buying an AM3 motherboard?

Yes AM2+ supports all Phenom 2. It uses DDR2.

AM3 uses DDR3. Theres no advantage going with AM3 and DDR3 except future upgradability MAY be better. Not sure though because I think even the new processors coming out (Athlon2 X2/X4) will have DDR2 and DDR3 integrated memory controllers.
