Jvc dvd-r 16x not recognized

Hello,
I just installed a Matshita DVD-ROM drive unit into my d610 laptop and then JVC DVD-R discs I'm using aren't being accepted as writeable.I have 50 of them are they going to not be usable? What am I missing? Please help. I have a bunch of movies I downloaded from the web that I'd like to put DVD. Thanks.
