Hi, I'm building a NAS for small business network. I need 12TB of storage, I have budget of $1600, I also have alot of 1TB drives laying around.
I was thinking RAID 6,Z, or 0+1. will on-board RAID work? does anyone have any advice on what i should get?

Not familiar with Z (ZFS?), but I'd put 6 over 10 on a NAS. For direct, high performance storage, 10 rules. Over a network, network latency is probably more of an issue. 6 gives you good performance with great redundancy.

What do you mean by "on board RAID" - on board what? Do you have a server with built in raid (like Dell PERC cards)?

By on-board RAID I assume you mean utilizing the existing SATA controller on your motherboard? Or do you mean software RAID?

Either way, you'll most likely need a drive controller of some sort; most motherboards don't have any more than 6 SATA ports. If you wanted 12TB with redundancy, you'll need more than 6 disks.
