Hi,

I am in the process of putting together a new I7 build, it would be great if you guys could give me some advice on the components i have chosen. I have not put any prices because i live in New Zealand, so nothing is really comparable to the States.

Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe
CPU : Intel Core i7 920
GFX: Galaxy GTX260+
RAM: Cosair 3gb triple channel kit @1333mhz
CPU Cooler: TRUE 120mm
PSU : Cosair 1000HX
Case: NZXT Tempest
HDD: Seagate 500gb 7200.11
DVD/RW : Asus DRW-201BLT

I will be doing a moderate amount of gaming, with a lot of matlab and CAD. I have decided against building a core2 /quad build - even if the performance in certain areas still excels.

Thanks for the help,

Aoedogg.

That PSU is way overkill unless you plan on going 3 way sli in the future. A 650tx from corsair would do fine. Also I would go with a EVGA core 216. that gfx gtx 260+ is really expensive for a stock clocked card. I'm not really a fan of that case either cuz of the USB ports are on the top, but thats personal preference. Check out coolermaster 690 midtower case-cheap and well designed, or the more expensive HAF 932. You will probably want 6GB of ram too for CAD. Check out G. Skill kits, they are pretty cheap compared to most other brands

My suggested revisions:

Mobo: If you can wait until it comes out, get the P6T Deluxe V2. For your needs, also look at the Asus X58 workstation boards, especially the P6T6 WS Revolution if you need a special expansion slot setup.

Video card: 55nm eVGA Core 216 (part # 1255-AR), or GTX 280 if you can find a good deal right now

RAM: +1 for G.Skill, 3x2GB or even 12GB if you need it for CAD. G.Skill is the cheapest in the US, but if not in NZ, then look at Mushkin or Corsair. You should probably get DDR3-1600.

PSU: Corsair TX850 (or PC P&C 860W)

HDD: WD Caviar Black 640GB (don't use Seagate 7200.11 as they are having problems right now)

Optical drive: Samsung SH-S223Q (Lightscribe) or SH-S223F (no Lightscribe)

Backplate: Thermalright LGA 1366 Bolt-Thru Kit

+1 to all that.

However, I do like the NZXT Tempest because it has intake fan filters and that's essential if you have pets. Also, I find USB ports on top to be very convenient. I guess it depends on where the case is. If it 's on the floor like my TJ-09 then the top is the most accessible place.

QUESTION ! got 2 b jumpers out there 2 plug into 2nd sli card ? my pcu can plug in 1rst card np but low on wires atm also need plugs for fans. & wich is more stable 1333 or 1600 memory setup or is all tri channel good 2 go unclocked, the choices boggle me mind . i ordered 64 bit cd so getting 6 gigs, read 64+vista has probs ?. if i stick with 32bit ill leave 2gig out?? or will it be ok just to install knowing i wont beny from it & be able 2 find it when needed. i guess placements of gpu & memory is tricky ?? thx cj

Doesn't V2 just drop the SAS controller? , i've looked at the WS Revolution, for me the extra features do not justify the extra price.

Atm, the Cosair RAM is the cheapest in NZ. Looking into 1600, budget is holding me back though.

Is it the EVGA core 216 which is 55nm?

Thanks for the help everyone.

Responses:

PSU: 750W for one video card, 850W if you want to leave room to SLI later. I had originally made the assumption that you would SLI.

Video Card: Here is a Newegg link for the 55nm eVGA GTX 260 Core 216. Here's the link to the eVGA homepage.

P6T Deluxe: Not sure if it's just a tempest in a teapot, but "V2" has a meaning in the tech world. Just like SP1. :heink:

Why can't we be like NZ on Corsair RAM?

Would 750 give me good OC headroom with the single gfx card?

You bet. 750 is all you need unless you add a second nVidia video card.

Btw, make sure that the text you want to quote is inside the two markers with square brackets.

Hi,

I have now decided to up my gfx to a 285. Would the 750W PSU still be ok? - i don't plan to SLI, but am going to oc the cpu/gfx

Cheers
