It can't flash the BIOS if you don't insert a bootable CD/DVD with a BIOS file and use it to flash your BIOS.
Connect both units and they will work. You should use the IDE cable that came with your motherboard. Performance when using both devices might not be great, but it will work and nothing will happen to your BIOS.
right thanks for your quick replies but im slightly a pc noob so ... when you say somthing like (You have 3 ide drives total. You will only be able to use 2)
so i need to use say my HDD with my Dvd drive just 1 yes ? and that being -

You wont, your friend clearly doesnt know what he's talking about, flashing the bios is basically updating it, and to do that you need to use a floppy or usb to update it, which is done manually, it would be pretty damn hard to do it on accident.

That's one of the more reduculous things I've heard. There's no chance using an empty IDE optical drive will cause a BIOS flash.
Asus is actually one of the more IDE friendly boards. They were one of the last manufacturers that I found still making 2 IDE ports on their boards. They don't anymore, but they were one of the last.
Actually it can flash the Bios. Mine did when i tried to use an ide dvd drive with my asus maximum formula 2. Same with Asus P5n board's they only accept ide dvd drives too. If there is no dvd to boot from it tries to boot from dvd. Which fails and then further asks if you want to update the bios with the one on the hard drive (assuming there already is a windows os on there). This is not possible to happen when a blank hard drive is attached.

im really confused im building it 2moro someone give me steps when i put both IDE DVD drive in with the IDE HDD. thanks
That motherboard has a single IDE connector. The IDE cable allows for 2 IDE devices. Choose which ones you want to install: both DVDs and no IDE hard disk or one DVD and one IDE hard disk. Why don't you get a SATA hard disk or a SATA DVD-RW if you need 2 DVDs? A new faster SATA hard disk makes a lot of sense.

most ridiculous thing i've ever heard.
Considering I HAVE the asus maximus II formula board.
And I did have IDE dvd drives - before replacing with SATA drives.
Windows (anything) does not contain BIOS upgrade to flash with.
And clearly you dont know how to even change the boot order of something in bios.
Please refrain from posting incorrect information - youre doing nothing but confusing this guy even more.
so putting in y ( IDE ) DVD drive in the slave socket and my ( IDE ) HDD in the master connecting to the board - also noting that my HDD will have my info from my old pc aswell as my OS which i guess i need to reformat ect .. on this new pc so i turn it on and i do what please write this in steps .. thanks
guys just looking at my HDD atm and my Jumper pins are set like i just ook a look in my pc atm and its like this
[:] : : :
now thats running 2 dvd drives and i know im gona be using only the DVD drive and the HDD what should the jumper be set as
I would make sure the hdd is set as master, and the dvd is set as slave. I cant tell you if that's a correct jumper set up though, reason being, it usually says ON the HDD label or the back of the HDD what the jumper settings would be (it varies slightly for each company). If it's not on either you can check the manufacterers website or the manual.

Very simple... Once you get your jumpers set correctly like the nice people told you above me.... HDD as primary master, DVD1 as your slave drive... simply turn on the pc, get to the bios screen usually Del or F8 dep on the manufacturer... change boot device to reflect your dvd drive as boot first in the line up..... this step is unecessary if you have a boot option from your board manufacturer but regardless if you do it that way it will work... Now exit saving your settings and reboot when it asks you to hit any key to boot from cd rom or dvd rom press the ANY KEY... sorry I had to.... follow the on screen instructions for installing windows... I usually always delete all the partitions and create a new one... (unless you have it split with data you want saved on another logical partition on that drive) and format before installing.... NOTE.... after your first restart while installing windows go into your bios screen and change the order again to reflect IDE HDD1 as your 1st boot device... otherwise it will give you the same msg over and over again.... (to boot from CDROM press any key...)
