Disk is write protected

Hello,
my hard drive wont let me put anything on or take anything off and when i try to change permissions it tells me all the files on the hard drive are write protcted i dont want to loose the files how do i change that things is i think i set up the drive on my desk top and im in afghanastan on my laptop

Last time this happened to me, I had to transfer 500 gigs of files into another external HD and then do a format and then transfer the files back.

[carefully] use a partition editor (PartitionMagic, PartedMagic etc) and check if the partition has been marked as write protected.
