I'm building a new gaming rig to play high end games. This is a computer that I plan on updating every time a new hardware comes out.
Sofar I'm looking at this:
Intel Core i7 920 Processor LGA1366 2.66GHz 8MB Cache CPU
Cooler Master V8 HeatPipe Universal Cooler
Asus RAMPAGE II Extreme LGA1366 X58 6DDR3
Western Digital 300G SATA II VelociRaptor(WD3000HLFS)
XFX GeForce 9800GTX+ 512M DDR3
Acer P244WB 24 wide 2ms Black VGA/Analogue HDMI
Sony AD7200S0B 20X SATA OEM DVD RW Black
Antec SKELETON ATX Tower NO PSU
CoolerMaster UCP 1100W EPS Power Supply
Patriot 6G(3X2G) DDR3 1600 Tri Kit CL9 Viper
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic 64bit
I hear I can OC to 3.5ghz safely with i7 so that's what I plan to do. I chose 9800 GTX because I plan on getting gtx300's when they come out. is it worth buying something better than that? Maybe a GTX280 or 4870x2? And will an Antec Skeleton be able to hold the new giant graphics cards? I believe they can hold a graphics card up to 11" in length.
What you see up there comes to a hefty AUS$4,000. I still haven't bought keyboard, mouse, speakers, desk, chair lol. I will buy those in local local stores after I buy the computer.
Overall ... way to much money in the wrong places; people with 1250$USD rigs will kick your system's ass.
Do you really need such a high-priced MB? EVGA's X58 is 100$USD cheaper in the US and highly rated.
Velociraptor won't give in-game performance; at best you will save a few seconds of loading/booting time. Moreover, if you have lots of multimedia files (audio, video), you might need more space than 300GB.
You should get at least a 4870 or a GTX260 for that 24" screen, a GTX280 or 4870x2 wouldn't be overkill either.
Why do you need such a big PSU, the only reason you might need that is if you want triple/quad SLI which have been proven not to be worth the money.
Get at least Vista Home Premium or you won't get the Aero (good looking) desktop.
I don't think the Skeleton is a good board for general public. I think it's more suited for shop demos or people who have to play with their hardware once a week.
