Update February 12, 2005
http://www.livin-it-up.net

Welcome to another Livin-It-Up update.

First, Happy Saint Valentine's Day, we wish you and your special someone(s)
a very special day.

Not a huge update this time, but I guess logic would dictate that they
aren't all going to be. Just the same, it's a nice little update with quite
a few goodies, some of which will surely interest you.

Beginning with The Sims, we've got some unique and interesting new oriental
pieces by Ohmikeghod in the objects section. Decorative screens, themed
windows, even a new pagoda roof.

In the skins section, hot pink. From Lachelle, who we're glad to see back at
it, a selection of stylish and sexy new ladies outfits.

From NorthernKat and Ohmikeghod, a variety of new walls, floors, and roofs.
Included are several murals, walls, and roofs to accent this update's
oriental themed objects.

In the Sims2 world, more great recolored objects by Bluegenie2 including a
variety of seating, surfaces, lighting, beds, and decor. Matching blue walls
by Bluegenie2 as well.

Seven new Sims2 houses by Similis. Several small, low-cost starter homes
which seem to be popular and often requested. A couple mid-sized homes, even
a club.

That pretty much tops off this one folks, we certainly hope you'll join us
again for the next update at Livin-It-Up.

A very nice looking update, but why is it that you want to waste your
bandwidth? Grrr...

With a download manager, I can look at a few sites and line up the
downloads while I'm browsing and then start them downloading while I
make a cup of tea, so that my limited bandwidth can be used for what I want.

With a download manager, I can queue up the downloads so that they
download one after the other, so that the site gets a steady trickle of
bandwidth usage rather than a large number of requests in one go. Since
most hosts charge extra for high peak usage, it is in the site's
interests to try to avoid lots of requests all in one go.

With a download manager, I can specify a class on a file-by-file basis,
so that my skin downloads can go into a different directory than my
object downloads with just a couple of clicks. Rather than having them
all go into one place with me having to sort through afterwards trying
to remember what each file is.

With a download manager, I can take advantage of http resume, so that if
I get disconnected I can restart from where I got to, rather than having
to download the first part again. Since hosting costs include a limit on
total bandwidth used, generally with penalties for going over that
limit, it is again in the site's interests to avoid wasting bandwidth by
forcing visitors to download the same thing over and over again.

I really love the site, and you have created some wonderful things that
have enriched my game enormously. I know that web hosting is an
expensive business, and it is frustrating to see a site that I truly
wish to succeed and grow making things difficult for visitors just to
increase the costs of hosting the site.

I know that the problem as you see it is that without your policy of
borking download managers you will be inundated with people leeching
your site a page at a time. I have no idea how many visitors to your
site care so little about your site and the Sims community to do that -
I only have a sample size of 1. Perhaps it is something that is worth
examining, to identify whether your policy is as necessary as you feel
it is at the moment.

Another possibility, and I don't know how easy it is to implement, is to
use referrer information. As I understand it, that would allow the use
of properly configured download managers, but ensure that visitors had
actually clicked on the link rather than simply harvesting the page.

Again, I'd like to say that I do genuinely love the site, and this isn't
any form of attack on any of you. I am simply frustrated that my life is
made harder for what is overall probably a net loss for the site.

I wish you every continued success.

Thanks! That's okay about the existing objects. We can do them ourselves
with SimPE because
he's working on a version of SimPE that will make it easier for us to
convert them to be compatible
with University. :)
