Mobo upgrade question

Im planning to upgrade my mobo / CPU soon. My question is.. is there a way to install a new mobo /CPU without having to re-format/re-install my OS?

- I currently have a ECS 6100SM-M (nvidia chipset) and I'm planning to upgrade to a mobo with a GeForce 8200 chipset if that makes any difference...

If you use xp, then you may be able to go in and uninstall all the devices listed in the device manager (under "system" in the control panel), and shut down your system before installing the new board. Sometimes this works. If using vista, then you can back up your files first using the vista software, and this may prevent a format.
