Well this might be a pointless thread to many, (and to those folks i apologize) but i come hear to share my joy and successes of unlocking my 4th core on my AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE that i purchased a week ago and i am very please with it, i got an oc of 3.2 from 2.8 (stock) just by bumping up the multi to 16 and it runs as solid as a rock, with temps averaging in the mid to low 30s celsius. I didnt think i would be capable of unlocking the 4th core with my Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD4H , i searched the bios options as soon as i got everything together, and i couldnt find the ACC option but i remembered reading somewhere that pressing alt + f1 at the main bios page unlocked advanced bios options so i gave it a shot and it was all magic from there. : )

Good for you. Unlike you though my board does not have the SB750 (while the current gigabyte 790X board does), so I'm waiting for the 955, or at least for the 940 to drop in price ^_^.

Count yourself as one of the lucky few.

Would have been nice if all of them did that but then they would have just been X4s

I' got the 720BE with GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-UD4H and couldn't unlock the 4th core... so I returned it to the local shop and got Intel Q9400.

Smart man. I'm regretting my 720 purchase. Should have bought a Q6600 instead

Power consumption is the only thing in which the Q6600 beats the Phenom II 720 Black Edition.

Yeah the Phenom II 720 will overclock better and is faster clock for clock in games. It is really the better CPU.

PeanutPC, why the hell did you return the 720 for a Q9400 if you already have the motherboard and coul have gotten the Phenom II 940 which outperforms the Q9400 as well as being cheaper?

The process of unlocking the 4th core is not guaranteed. There is a small chance it happens. Taking back a product because it doesn't have the 4th core working is irresponsible at best. Only hurts the business which in turn raises prices if enough people do the same. :non:

Hah psychosaysdie, is an endless pit of nonsense, i dont think i have ever read a post of his that wasn't completely laughable at best. And to be honest i have my proc running at 3.4 on air with multi increase and it averages 37c idle id say that its a pretty awesome processor. And i believe i recall the 720 topping the q6600 in almost every benchmark :p

I ran the BE 720 and really didn't like the performance I was getting. I was building a new PC for my wife and wanted the best price/performance out of our pennies. I got the BE 720 w/ GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-UD4H for $264 and Q9400 w/ Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR for $285. Extra $21 gave 4th core and better clock to clock performance. I was a AMD fanboy for longest time but AMD doesn't compete anymore, so they lost me as an customer.

I got my Q9400 for $180. PII 940 was $220ish at the local shop and PII 940 doesn't outperforms the Q9400. I had the 940 for 2 month and sold it to a friend. Clock for clock Q9400 is faster.

In some apps yes, but gains more at higher clocks and got the better of the Q9400 at 3.8 Ghz+ about half the time. As for the price you paid, good job. I was just wondering that is all, they are basically the same chip afterall.

As for you noticing the difference between a Phenom II 720 and a Q9400, you are purely full of it unless you were starring at the completion bar while encoding videos...

my wife encodes alot of videos. and we did notice the difference between PII 720, Q9400 & my CI7 920.

Well there you go. That raises the question of why you opted for 3 instead of 4 in the first place. I'm not judging however, the answer to that question sets a good example for people. I respect you for trying the 720 out instead of writing it off. I wish more people would do that, hell I wish I did that then I would have realized how useless my i7 really was over any other quadcore at 3.6 Ghz+, but sometimes I like to spend lots of money for the shiniest things. This I suppose is the American mentality.

Um ... so your saying that getting a 4th core for free is pointless because the Phenom II quad core isn't a good processor?

Nope, I'm saying they disabled the core for a reason, mostly it is more unstable etc. and according to to the latest THG articles, are harder and harder to get these days.

A 4th core might be "off"???
