External HDD to eSata Port

Hi there,

I am looking to expand my storage capacity. My question is:

Can I connect an External SATA HDD Caddy to the eSata port on my motherboard?

Or does it have to connect to an eSata Port on a Sata Controller card that can handle port multiplication?

Many thanks in advance.

Yes you can, that's what the eSata port is for.
As long as you have a sata external connection on the caddy, as opposed to a caddy with a sata drive but with usb connection.
