If I have a PCI-e x16 slot on my motherboard, will a PCI-e 2.0 x16 graphics card work in it?

I know the 2.0 slots are backwards compatible to the old cards, but are the 2.0 cards compatible with the old slots?

Whats the card?
Im not aware of any that require PCI-e 2.0 but there are somevery high end cards that may get close to bottlenecking 1.0 bandwidth.

Edit: whats the mobo as well

The card I'm looking at is a GeForce 9800 GTX. I would like to avoid it bottlenecking as that would just be wasting money, however I will eventually be upgrading my motherboard, so I can always carry the card over.

The main thing I'm worried about is it not working at all in the non-2.0 PCI slot. As for my current motherboard, I'll have to get back to you on that.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5LP-LE

You should be fine I got an 8800GT on a socket 939 board works great. Just make sure your power supply will handle that card.

Bottle necking shouldn't be a problem games really don't push the PCI express 1.0 specs if you was gaming back in the AGP x2, x4, x8 days you would remember it not buying much of anything in improvement.

Alright, so then apparently 2.0 simply affects the speed at which the card/slot can transfer data, it is not a different connection that excludes the older version from being used, nor should it drastically slow anything down. Thanks for the help guys!
