Hey Toms Hardware,

Im pretty sure ive been using this forums for as long as I can remember. You guys are always a great help!

Anyways...

So I'm finally able to build a system myself and I need some help from the experts here :) I love gaming, and always will. I'm a WoW addict in my free time, and love playing the biggest new fps that come out, So I want my system to be top notch.

First question, What do I gain from using a i7 over a core 2 quad? I know iv'e heard from everyone about how amazing the i7 is. Also, what about going with AMD instead of intel? Does amd have anything that competes with intels lineup.

About the video cards, Iv'e always been a nvidia fanboy, and was disturbed when the 4870x2 was the top end video card. Is the 4870x2 still the best price per dollar? What about the new 295gtx?

It seems like all harddrives are the exact same to me, what should I be looking for? What does the cashe do? What would I gain if I choose a 10000rpm over a 7500?

As for memory, How much does a brand matter? I know Ive always heard great things from companys like oz and patriot, but at the same time, I see memory with the same stats that are 50$ cheaper. The only difference is a brand name I havent heard of.

Will im at work currently, and ill check back time to time today. Thanks in advance for your help.

Edit: Just read the "* Guide to choosing parts*" which helped with some of my questions.

i7 is the fastest at the moment.
AMD lags behind Intel. Price is good though.

GTX295 is the fastest.

For hard drives check Tom's performance charts.

Look for overclockability in memory and brands like OCZ, Patriot, Corsair and Crucial. Look for low voltage not above 1.65v for DDR3. For DDR2 look for 1.8v or something like that.

These are some quick questions you should first start answering:
1) Do you plan on Ocing and to what degree
2) Screen Size and resolution
3) Expectations out of PC? (how many years will it be good for/ quality of gameplay)

+1 to all of evonugg's comments.
(Added comments):
*AMD is not doing that great, Go Intel
*GTX 295 (read reviews on this card...I think you'd be impressed.) Only get this if you plan on getting the i7. It'd be hard for a lower end quad core to push this thing i think.
*WD carvier black 640gb verison is closing in on the speeds of some of the rapotrs. ( $80 @ newegg.com )

Do you need a monitor to be included in your $1500 budget?
OS?

1) Yeah I plan on OCing, I honestly know nothing about it right now, but thats nothing research and google cant fix.

2)As for screen size, hmmm 22inch monitor sounds about right, 24 would be better. I plan on 1920 x 1200res or higher.

3) About 2 years for amazing gameplay, and 2 years after that with decent game settings. That sounds about right

Im not sure about getting a monitor yet? As per what I said before, whats a good brand/type of monitor to look at.

Thanks for the reply for my couple of questions: One last one. Does your $1500 budget include a monitor/os/keyboard/mouse..ect? With this information it'll help us stear u in the right way with where you should go with your build.

I already have copies of Vista Ulti 64bit and mouse/keyboard. Hopefully the 1500 budget would include a monitor.
