how do I update a BFG SLI 680i Motherboard? The files just come as .bin's, I'm running Vista 64 so I can't boot to Dos to follow the instructions to boot with a USB drive with the flash.exe and the .bin file. The am2flash thing that comes with the motherboard (you hit Alt F2 on the boot screen to load it) just dies when I try to load it. I don't have a floppy disk either. Is there some sort of way to do this? I tried downloading Nvidia Update that I found in this forum http://forums.slizone.com/index.php?showtopic=9531 but the software is old and won't show up in my control panel. I'm at a loss here.
I found some Nvidia update software on their website that allowed me to select the BFG bin files and flash the motherboard, but my problems just got worse from there.
Long story short fellas I got a new QuadCore Q8400 (2.66) to replace my old e6600 Core2Duo (2.4). I had the e6600 over clocked with a big Typhoon CPU fan to 3.4 Ghz for the past 2 years. I installed the Quad, reset the jumpers on the motherboard, and rebooted. The system didn't detect the right settings for the chip so I set it up for its defaults. My motherboard is a BFG Nvidia nforce SLI680i motherboard. So when I tried to Overclock my Q8400 (thinking I could push it to 3.0 with ease sense the e6600 was at 3.4 for so long) the machine wouldn't boot so I updated the bios to the motherboard with all the Nvidia software found on their site. The machine booted at stock, so I tried to over clock the FSB to get it to 3.0. The machine wouldn't boot so I used the Nvidia Performance tool to try to overclock the FSB to 370. Problem is now whenever I boot the machine crashes. I restored the original settings in the bios on boot, but the Nvidia performance keeps loading it's settings when I boot the OS, which causes the machine to crash instantly. I tried booting up in Safe mode to uninstall the software but because I'm on Vista 64, I cannot remove the software from safe mode because I get "error 1719. Windows Installer service could not be accessed. Contact your support personnel to verify that it is properly registered and enabled" . Upon further investigation I found the service cannot be enabled in safe mode. If I don't boot in safe mode the machine crashes, I can't use the software in safemode to change the settings, and I can't uninstall the software in safe mode, so what the hell do I do?
I know the problem is the performance software changing the FSB values on boot because if I load on my XP 64 partition the system is stable. Where does Nvidia Performance save the profiles it loads on boot? How can I keep it from booting? Is there a way I could delete the profiles from safe mode since I can't uninstall the software? Should I throw in the towel and reformat?
Sorry to keep updating to my own thread but I figured out how to kill Nvidia Performance. Used safemode to disable the Nvidia Performance service, then managed to get it to boot in normal mode and uninstalled the software. So now I'm back to where I started.
