Can a sata laptop accept a sata ii?

I'm looking at replacing my laptop HD with a SSD HD. My laptop has a SATA interface. Will a SATA II SSD HD work, or do I have to stay with a SATA HD?

SATA II will be backwards compatible, but the speeds will be limited to the maximum throughput of SATA I, which is 1.5Gb/s.
