This would be for my CAD workstation.
Right now I have an ATI FireGL V3600 card with dual digital outputs, and I'm running a pair of Viewsonic 22" widescreens.
I had a wild idea to switch to a larger central display and put a smaller display on each side since we have some older 19" non-widescreen displays laying around. The added display would not need any special graphics acceleration capabilities.

My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R. It has a single PCIEX16 slot, and some 3 each PCIEX1 and PCI slots. Would I get a standard PCI card to run a third monitor? If you have dual video cards what is required to extend the desktop across 3 screens? Would both cards need to be ATI?

You may be able to simply split the cable off of one of the ATI outputs and hook the two 19" up to it. Windows should recognize them as 2 monitors.

I'd go that road since you don't need heavy graphics acceleration if it's just a workstation.

i'd suggest a matrox tripleheadtogo. it's exactly what you're looking for.
