I currently own an EVGA Geforce 8600 GTX, 512 MB GDDR3
I am waiting for my barebones kit to arrive (ups should be here any moment).
This kit included an XFX Geforce 9600 GSO, 768 MB GDDR2.
Which card should perform better? GDDR3 512, or GDDR2 768?
Also, the XFX 768 GDDR2 card is PCI express 2.0, as is my new mobo. The EVGA card is NOT 2.0.
So I'm guessing that covers it right there. Any opinions?
Generally the pcie 2.0 thing dosent matter as its backwards/forwards compatable, there are some exceptions but you could google your board and card /compatability to find out if there are any issues.
The GSO is the better card its basically a 8800GS if that makes sense to you.
Ok, thx. Yeah, the cards/mobo are fully backward compatible, both ways. But thanks, i'll leave the GTS in my current comp and leave the GSO for the new.
Asus M3N78 Pro is the mobo.....when it gets here... Waiting for UPS makes me so antsy lol.
There are many GSOs, the one he is getting is NOT the 8800GS. The GDDR2 768MB boards come on the same 192bit bus, but have the slower DDR2 memory. As far as memory bandwidth is concerned, this slows things down quite a bit. Assuming he has the 8600GTS, things will be close. I don't remember off hand how many SP the 8600GTS has. Assuming it has the same amount as the 8600GT (32 vs 96) the 9600GSO will probably win most benchies. That and have much more ram. I'd love to see you test both and tell us what you score.

And yeah, I suppose ill test em both out and benchmark 'em and post the results. It'd happen tonight, but unfortunate NO computer stores in my town carry AM2 Heatsinks/Fans, so I gotta order one :-(. nothing like getting what you want, and not being able to use it cause you forgot to order a freakin' fan
Yes i agree those benchmarks should make interesting reading as the only differance as far as i can see is the DDR2, it will give us a real picture of just how much differance it makes.
Other ppl who ordered the card/barebone kit are saying that for some reason, the card shows up as 1014MB, and GDDR3. I pray this is the case, then. heh. If I'm not satisfied with it, i'll just get a dif one. Benchmarks are coming though.
