This may be the wrong section, but I'll risk having you guys let me know.

I've got a 24" 1080p monitor. I'm building a new rig around it in a way with a Q9550, plenty of ram, P45-UD3P board, nice everything else and yeah you get it.

My question is, while I want to play games at higher settings, I also want to watch HD content and NOT HAVE IT F'IN CHOP UP. Ugh. My current made-o-poo computer chops up for HD streaming content, but I'm not wanting to focus on that. For my upcoming rig, I would like it to be able to play HD material in a silky smooth manner regardless of whether it is streamed or from a Blu-ray disc.

As I understand, for gaming, it depends on the game as to whether or not it uses more of the CPU or more of the GPU to take load off of the CPU.

What about HD content? How can I find that balance and do you have any suggestions?

Almost all newer graphics cards can handle HD video without any problems. I'd recommend getting at least an HD4850 or 9800GTX+, but you probably want to look at the HD4870 and GTX260 cards that are more expensive but perform better. A 4850 or 9800GTX will handle most games at 1680x1050 (the resolution you'll most likely use since many games don't support a 16x9 aspect ratio) at relatively high settings, while the 4870 and GTX260 will probably allow you to come close to maxing out your settings at that resolution. Another thing to consider if you're going to be using your computer for watching HD movies is whether you want the audio to be sent over the HDMI cable. ATI cards can send 7.1 audio over HDMI while Nvidia cards can't so this is something to consider. I've found that ATI cards tend to have better image quality when playing back video, but this can be kind of subjective.

Thanks for the info.

On the audio side of things...yeah. I don't have surround sound.:( On board audio only for now.
